Freedom is Not a Spectator Sport- So Thank a Vet --- The Pledge of Allegiance
An old man, tattered and frail, shuffles down the street is approached by uniformed soldiers, young and polished who ask, “Are you a Jew?” He replies to the affirmative and gives a gesture of peace which is met by a bullet to his head. Elsewhere a family gathers to place a manger at their door and pray, only to be dragged to prison where the family is separated the young children are taken to a government home where they indoctrinated as soldiers of the State. A congregation gathers in a Mosque to pray and a bomb explodes killing and maiming innocent men, women and children because their beliefs do not conform with that of the government while elsewhere families are kidnapped, tortured and beheaded for similar reasons, while other government dictators and the ruling elite live in palaces while the majority of the population eat scraps living in overpopulated slums. To ensure their dictatorial power their armies invade neighboring countries to expand their influence. Orders are given that anyone who refuses to conform or interfere are to be eliminated en mass, while the world stands by intimidated by the power of their weapons of mass destruction. While millions of Americans enjoy the freedom to worship as they choose, and the opportunity to achieve the education and skills which enable them to improve their quality of life, few give thought to those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure this freedom and preserve a government of the people, by the people and for the people. While it saddens me to witness many who take their rights and freedoms for granted, going through life as if it is an entitled right freely granted and for which no price was paid, I stand in awe as thousands of immigrants continue to come to America where their achievements are limited only by their willingness to pursue their dreams. For if not those brave Americans who stand to risk life and limb to protect the freedom and opportunities enjoyed by their fellow citizens and protect the rights of our global neighbors, then who? These brave men and women understand and appreciate that we are a Nation born from revolutionaries who shed their blood to ensure the freedom of their families and generations to come. In the words of our late President John F. Kennedy, “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” Although few of these brave men and women were even alive to hear and appreciate the words of this president delivered in his inaugural address to the Nation more than 45 years ago on January 20, 1961, they understand that is the sacrifices of a few that protect the liberties of many. So in these times of change and global confusion, let every American deliver a message of thanks and support to our past, present and future Veterans who risk making the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the rights and liberties of those who want to be free, and ensure that never again shall one generation of veterans abandon another. And just as important….exercise your right to vote! |
