 Operation Take a Vet Fishing

Operation Take a Vet Fishing and Take a Soldier Fishing have become national initiatives with private anglers and professional charter captains offering free fishing trips to veterans of the United States armed forces across the country. Trips have already been launched in the south and trips are being planned now in the northeast. To see who is offering trips to soldiers and veterans in your area, or to volunteer to participate visit the forum at www.takeavetfishing.org.

NYS Marine Fishing Fee Leaves Elderly and Struggling Families High & Dry

In the midst of the worst economic disaster the U.S.A. has experienced since the Great Depression, effective October 1, 2009, every person over the age of 15 (with limited exceptions) is required to purchase a salt water Marine Fishing License. Although the license is not required for those who fish on a commercial charter or party fishing boat, the boat is required to purchase a license at an annual $400.

The license requirement was passed as a component of Governor Patterson’s 2008/2009 annual budget. This controversial license has been kicked around the Capitol for years without success as our representatives realized that there was something “fishy” about taxing this age old recreational family activity that affects the recreational use of nature’s water and marine species which know no boundaries. The annual cost per person who are NYS residents for the annual license is $10, daily $3, 7 day $8, lifetime $150. The fees from marine licenses are required to be deposited into a special Marine Account as a special sub-account of the Conservation Fund which are “available” to the DEC specifically for the care, management, protection and enlargement of marine fish and shellfish resources.
